Women in Transport is holding a second session of its virtual book club following a successful launch in April this year.
Based on suggestions from members, this session will focus on The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
While a work of fiction, this influential book is ultimately a commentary on current social conditions and the injustices that target women. Its theme of perseverance against inequity still resonates today despite being published 25 years ago.
In the face of injustice, it is worth remembering: nolite te bastardes carborundorum.
We will explore the book's plot and themes through group discussion, including:
Did you find this book relatable and believable, or did you find it far-fetched?
In what ways does it reflect what is happening in the world today?
How does having a single narrator (Ofred’s point of view) affect the storytelling? Do you miss not having another point of view?
Who is responsible for maintaining Gilead society, women or men?
The narrative of The Handmaid’s Tale ends with questions, not answers. Does this satisfy you?
The book club is only open to Women in Transport members. We are currently planning for quarterly meetings so if you are interested but can't make this session, you are welcome to join us in the autumn.
